A short time ago in a galaxy not so far, far away...
In 1998, four childhood buddies with a shared love of all things Star Wars reunite for one last quest. Their mission: a cross-country road trip to storm George Lucas´
Skywalker Ranch and steal a copy of Episode I before it´s released. This is a movie that isn't going to be fully appreciated except for those of us who were that certain age at that certain time in the 80's. It should be noted that the cancer plot is still in this released version but it's done in such a way that it doesn't linger or feel overly depressing. I think they made a good choice of keeping it intact, if they hadn't, it would just be the same road movie we've seen dozens of times.
Along the way they clash with crazed Trekkies (Kirk lovin Spock suckers), redneck police, and an angry pimp, most of which are played by Seth Rogen. Memorable scenes include a gay biker bar that would put the Blue Oyster
to shame, Kevin Smith as a pimp, and Danny Trejo as an Indian chief that likes to refer to
himself in the third person "because it causes confusion, especially
with the bitches." I can honestly say I never thought I would ever see
a peyote trip fused with Star Wars characters until I saw this movie.
There are clever Star Wars references throughout the film and great cameos by famous alumni such as Billy Dee Williams as Judge Reinhold, Carrie
Fisher as a nurse who knows she's loved, and Ray Park as an overzealous security guard. William Shatner is amusing as the guy who can score anything, from plans to the Skywalker Ranch to Jeri Ryan's panties.
This movie is not hilarious and will never be considered a classic, but
it has just enough laughs and heart to make it charming and worth a
watch. It makes me long not for the 80's, but for 1998, when the worst problems people were worrying about was the Y2K virus and whether or not Star Wars: Episode 1 would be any good. It's one of the few comedies I would sit through a second time. The force is strong with this one.
Weinstein Company will release "Fanboys" on DVD this May 19th.
